Understanding a local Niamey radio station’s audience required combining listener statements with a territorial reading of coverage.

The challenge

A quantitative measure alone would show who listens, but less clearly why and under what conditions. A coverage map alone would not explain audience habits and expectations.

Method

The design combined 300 CAPI interviews and 10 focus groups. KoboToolbox supported structured collection, SPSS statistical analysis and QGIS spatial representation.

GIS component

Mapping used Landsat satellite imagery and NASA/SRTM digital elevation models to incorporate land cover and terrain into the coverage analysis.

How the study unfolded

01
Quantitative collection

300 face-to-face CAPI interviews, using a structured KoboToolbox questionnaire.

02
Focus groups

10 focus groups to capture habits, expectations and listening conditions the questionnaire cannot reach.

03
Statistical analysis

Responses processed in SPSS to characterize listening behavior.

04
Geospatial analysis

Landsat imagery and SRTM terrain models integrated in QGIS, to account for land cover and relief.

05
Cross-reading

Audience statements set against the territorial reading of coverage.

Deliverables

Dataset of 300 respondents

A controlled quantitative dataset, ready for analysis.

Qualitative synthesis

The findings drawn from the 10 focus groups.

Behavioral analysis

A statistical reading of listening habits.

Thematic maps

Coverage and study areas, represented spatially.

Outcome

The client received a combined view of the audience, expressed expectations and geographic coverage to guide editorial and technical decisions.
